The University of Osijek was founded on May 31st, 1975. University strategic aim is to assure internationalization at all levels of academic and research activity and to become widely visible and competitive in the international higher education community, while establishing efficient cooperation with universities worldwide.

The University vision is directed towards developing creative and innovative strategies that will be applied through a strategic planning process and that will allow the University to successfully compete in its surroundings and to manage strategic issues critical for the vision achievement. The University of Osijek connects research, artistic creation, teaching and studying, thus developing science, profession and arts, prepares students for professional work based on scientific knowledge and methods, as well as artistic value, educates young researchers, participates in realization of students’ social interests and promotes international, particularly European cooperation in higher education, in scientific and artistic activities.

International and inter-institutional cooperation of the University of Osijek is carried out within the activities based on 85 bilateral agreements,  914  Erasmus+ agreements, as well as within activities in the international university networks (European University Association, Danube Rectors’ Conference, Alps Adriatic Rectors’ Conference), international scientific and professional research projects of the European Commission, and international activities of student organizations. Since the University of Osijek is one of the promoters of the development of Eastern Croatia, its strategic goals refer to encouraging cross-border cooperation, which is particularly developed in the field of international research projects.

According to Quacquarelli Symonds annual rankings by region the University of Osijek is the one among five Croatian universities  ranked 231 – 240 (Emerging Europe and Central Asia list).

In the field of culture, the University of Osijek collaborates with local governments (Cities of Osijek, Đakovo, Požega), particularly in organizing various cultural events, symposiums, and concerts, involving prominent Croatian and foreign scientists and artists. In the field of arts, successful cooperation has been achieved with art academies and theaters on national level, as well as with numerous institutions and associations in Croatia and abroad.
